Radica has won the international “Small-Medium Enterprise of the Year” award for its carbon farming model. More than 30,000 hectares are enrolled in the programme and over 750 farms are involved across Italy and Spain.

Ostuni (Brindisi, Italy), 28 October 2026. From Puglia, where it was founded to help regenerate farmland hit by Xylella, to international recognition for innovation in sustainability. Radica (formerly Alberami) has won the “Small-Medium Enterprise of the Year” award at the Reuters Events Global Sustainability Awards 2026. The award recognises the growth of the Puglia-based benefit corporation, which is now building a technology infrastructure to make Mediterranean carbon farming measurable, verifiable and investable.

The award comes from one of the leading international events dedicated to corporate sustainability. Now in their sixteenth year, the Global Sustainability Awards received more than 700 entries across 19 categories in 2026, assessed by an independent jury of international experts. The category for small and medium-sized enterprises recognises organisations that tackle environmental and social challenges through innovative models, documented results and growth potential.

For Radica, the award marks a new milestone on a path that has turned an initiative born in Puglia into a company active in Italy and Spain, connecting farmers with international carbon markets. Today the company has more than 30,000 hectares enrolled in its programme and works with over 750 farms that have adopted regenerative agricultural practices, while Radica measures and verifies the carbon stored in their soils.

“This award belongs to the 750 farmers who choose regenerative practices every day and show that Italian agriculture can be part of the solution to the climate crisis. We were founded in Puglia in 2021, out of the damage caused by Xylella, with a simple idea: regenerate soils and give farmers the value of the carbon they return to the land. Seeing this work recognised by Reuters, alongside leading international companies, gives us even more energy to grow in Italy and Spain,”

said Francesco Musardo, founder and CEO of Radica.

From Alberami to Radica: the growth of a Mediterranean model

Radica’s story began in Puglia in 2021 with Alberami, created to help regenerate farmland affected by Xylella and to give farmers an economic return for the carbon they help store in their soils. That experience led to one of the first Italian carbon farming projects able to generate verified carbon credits (under an ICROA-endorsed standard) and income for farmers through the sale of carbon credits earned by adopting new regenerative agricultural practices.

Growth stepped up with the integration of the Spanish company Esférico MRV Systems, which specialises in satellite monitoring technologies, agronomic data analysis and carbon measurement and verification systems. This strategic move combined the field expertise built up by Alberami with its own technology infrastructure, laying the foundations for expansion from Puglia into the wider Mediterranean agricultural market.

This evolution gave rise to Radica, which now works to make carbon farming accessible and verifiable at scale. The company connects farmers who adopt regenerative soil management practices with businesses that invest in climate projects or need to measure the environmental impact of their supply chains. Using field data, satellite technology and independent verification systems, Radica measures the results of farming activities and, when they meet the requirements of the applicable standards, turns the verified results into carbon credits, whose sale provides income for farmers.

The model has steadily attracted the interest of international players. One of the most notable results is the inclusion of Radica’s AgroEcology Italy project in Lufthansa Group’s climate portfolio through the CEEZER marketplace. The project, developed on Mediterranean woody crops and active in 15 Italian regions, was selected as part of the CO₂ removal initiatives supported by the airline group. This shows Radica’s ability to bring Italian carbon farming to the attention of major international buyers.

Carbon farming: a new frontier for agriculture and climate finance

The Reuters award comes at a time of growing European attention to the role of agriculture in climate change mitigation. Through land management practices that increase carbon storage in soil and biomass, carbon farming can help remove CO₂ from the atmosphere, alongside the emission reductions that are still needed.

The topic is also on the European regulatory agenda. With the Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Certification Framework (CRCF), the European Union has introduced a voluntary certification framework for carbon removals and carbon farming activities, based on criteria of quality, monitoring and verifiability of results.

In this context, the challenge is not only adopting regenerative practices, but also measuring their effects and putting an economic value on results that have been verified. This is where Radica has built its position, with the aim of making these tools accessible to small and medium-sized farms as well, which are especially common across the Mediterranean.

Winning at the Global Sustainability Awards is therefore international recognition for a model rooted in the local territory and grown by bringing together agriculture, technology and climate finance, with the ambition of further expanding its presence across the Mediterranean.
